I want to be a girl again,I want my childhood back......
This statement moved me when i watched a popular actress Stephaine Linus Okereke's cinema hit "DRY"
Even though the movie's supposed theme was on early marriage and VVF,
I connected to the Rape part of it because i believe it is one common but least treated problem in our society today..
.......Rape has been defined as the act of forcing someone to have sexual intercourse against their will. This implies that the victim has been deprived of her choice .
The Aftermath of Rape is like taking a bitter herbal medicine and having the after taste on your tongue.
At that moment, nothing taste sweet to you anymore whether its your favourite snacks or ice-cream .
The first thing we all commonly do when we hear of a rape incident is condemn the rapist and demand justice for the victim,as good as these steps are ,are they usually enough ? We tend to forget that the victim had just had something precious stolen from her,her innocence, her choice or her whatever it may be..
All she has ever believed in becomes questioned, maybe surrounded by people but yet lonely inside, she begins to have trust issues, she no longer can differentiate between her nightmares and reality, her fears is what decides everything she do,every decision she takes and every action she makes..
A vacumn have been created which she must fill.
And in trying to do so,she turns to drugs, sex or whatever she feels will do the job,but unfortunately they are all usually temporay solutions with dangerous side effects.
It is at this point, addiction becomes the norm for her. At times ,she begins to entertain sucidal thoughts in her mind,a struggle to stay sane and how her brain hasn't exploded from over load, its a wonder..
While we are all condemning the rapist, the victim joins us in condemning the man who just robbed her of her dignity and her self worth but we better be careful not to let her within one inch near a gun and her rapist for vengence..This may just be the feeling keeping her standing. After the incident, society expects the victims to just accept what happened to them and move on. How? This isn't magic and the victims wanting to be accepted into the society again and pretends to forget and carry herself like nothing ever happen but she is like a man sitting on the keg of gun powder. When expects to hear wedding bells and see her walk down the aisle with her lucky man. What was never dealt with rise its ugly head to the surface, and all pent up emotions will have the same devasting effect like an earthquake of 3.0
I can write all day about how a Rape victim feels but now the question is how can she be helped.
